Role Descriptions
Foundations Member
The Foundations section is the Journal’s introductory training program, which most new members complete in their first semester with the Journal. Foundations Members receive training in data analysis and empirical research and have the opportunity to write and submit a data project—a brief, data-driven explainer on an economic topic of their choice—for publication on our website. After one semester in Foundations, you will have the opportunity to apply to join the Data & Graphics, Econometric Research, or External Relations divisions.
External Relations Associate
External Relations Associates handle the Journal’s outward-facing work, including managing external submissions for publication, attracting guest speakers, cultivating our alumni network, running a high-school essay contest, and coordinating events with other clubs or organizations. External Relations Associates display skills in: professional communication and outreach; relationship-building; attention to detail; and initiative in identifying and pursuing opportunities to build connections and grow our visibility.
Data Journalist
Data Journalists conduct rigorous data analysis on an economics-related topic of interest and produce relatively brief, chart-led data features for submission to publish in our magazine, The Reserve Review, and on our website. Their articles use beautiful data visualizations to tell a clear and engaging story, backed by thorough and transparent data work. Data features are written for a general audience, use minimal jargon, and emphasize intuitive explanation over technical formalism (e.g., no equations or regression tables). Data Journalists display skills in: coding; data gathering and wrangling; data visualization; and clear, public-facing narrative writing.
Econometric Analyst
Econometric Analysts conduct formal empirical research, typically using econometric methods, and produce full-length research papers over the course of two semesters for submission to be published in our journal and on our website. Their papers answer a clearly defined economics-related question using a thorough research design, careful data work, and appropriate statistical inference. Econometric Analysts display skills in: econometric reasoning; data gathering and wrangling; statistical programming and analysis; and clear technical writing. To apply for the Econometric Analyst position, you must have taken ECON 326: Econometrics.
